the knit cast on

This is a method of casting on by knitting the first stitch and transferring the resulting loop back to the left hand needle. The advantage of this method is that you don’t need to estimate how much tail you will need as you do for the Long Tail Cast On. It is particularly effective and creates a tidy edge when you follow Steps 7 to 10 to form the Cable Cast On.

Here’s how to cast on by knitting.

The text refers to the photo below

To begin, make a slip knot. [Refer to the lesson for the Long Tail Cast On

1. Slide the right hand needle into the slip knot, from the left and under the left hand needle as if to knit.

2. Wrap the yarn from the ball under and around the right hand needle as if to knit.

3. Draw the yarn through the loop to form a stitch but DO NOT slide it off the left hand needle as you would if you were knitting a stitch.

4. Pull on the right hand needle to loosen the stitch. Don’t be afraid of loosening it too much, as you will be able to tighten it again later.

5. Slide the left needle into the new stitch from the right side of the stitch and under the right needle. Slide the right needle out of the stitch.

6. You now have a new stitch on the left needle. You can continue to add more stitches by following steps 1 to 5, or you can continue to use the method below for further stitches.
